I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest maybe they pick an American made gun as a replacement

Why not go back to the 1911 platform?

They will propably go with glock. Glock can underbid and has a reputation for reliable. The people afraid of the plastic gun are no longer in charge. 1911 platform will cost too much for a reliable version. Sig is my usual way to lean but they are proud of them and hold a good price. But also politics play a role and could fool us all. Ruger polymer line is getting good reports from people I know use them.

I'd love to see the M&P w/ thumb safety make it's way into service.

    Default M9 Replacement?

I'd not rule out the 1911 platform. The Marine Corps just placed a bid to switch back to the 1911 platform made by Colt.

What is the point of having a thumb safety on a striker fired safe action pistol?

    Default M9 Replacement?

I have the M&P .40 with thumb safety. I like it cause it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
(That and the fact it was the only version of the .40 at my LGS when I bought it!)
I am now just ONE STEP shy of the dark side, although i do visit it frequently!
